East Coast Wounded Warriors
Three hearty Purple Heart Family Support volunteers are to be applauded for making their way to the National Naval Medical Center at Bethesda, Maryland after the record breaking snow storm in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Mary Ann and Paul Schilling and Cheryl Russell braved 20 to 24 inches of snow to serve meals at the hospital; Cheryl coming all the way from Frederick, Maryland. California Tortilla was undaunted by the storm, showing up on schedule with the burritos, salads and tostados.

Many staff members were pulling twenty-four hours shifts due to the snow emergency. They, along with the patients and families, were grateful to have food brought in to the fifth floor. Biting cold temperatures and waist high snow drifts would have made walking to the mess hall too time consuming for the short handed personnel and family members as well as being very unpleasant.
The Purple Heart Family Support volunteers also deliver meals to the patients on the seventh floor who are suffering Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and Catastrophic Brain Injury. The volunteers made two trips to the seventh floor with suppers. The ward clerk told Mary Ann when she delivered the second load of suppers, that he was so appreciative of the meals. He had not seen smiles on his patients’ faces all day until the burritos arrived; a happy change from hospital food.
The Purple Heart Family Support group for National Naval Medical Center at Bethesda, Maryland is in the process of scheduling one meal a month for the first six months of 2010.
