Four Purple Heart Family Support volunteers were invited to take part in Balboa’s Wounded Warrior Barracks Super Bowl party this year with approximately 250 Marines, Sailors and Soldiers! As one of America’s favorite pastimes, anticipation for the Super Bowl had been building all week across the Nation, and the excitement amongst our young men at Balboa was no different. By the time Sunday arrived, they were ready to watch the Saints and the Colts face off!
Marine Parents provided chicken wings, taquitos, veggie trays, brownies, sodas, and water while many other organizations donated plenty of other goodies. Good thing they did too, because we had the biggest turnout ever at the Liberty Center with every seat in the house being taken! Wounded Warriors, hospital staff, and volunteers sat side by side shouting and laughing together. What a beautiful sight!
The football game was exciting, and definitely a focal point for our young servicemen, but for the Purple Heart Family Support volunteers, it was a day that will never be forgotten! This is the second Super Bowl party that Marine Parents PHFS has been invited to, and we already can't wait for next year. Watching the camaraderie between our Wounded Warriors and the staff that serves them was truly touching.
Thank you for all your donations! They provide wonderful meals and also allow us to attend to our Wounded. There is no mess hall for these young men leaving the hospital’s McDonalds, Subway or Rice King as their only food options. Although these men do not have to be hospitalized, they do have to be close as they are recovering from their wounds, going through physical therapy, and being fitted for their prosthesis. With fast food options being the only ones readily available, you can see why they look forward to the meals we serve which is why we are pleased to announce that we will now be serving two meals a month at Balboa!
We will now be providing as many meals as Bethesda, and really hope to soon be serving meals in Brooke Army Medical Center’s Burn Unit in San Antonio. With the Afghanistan surge we are expecting more Wounded Warriors, and we want to make sure our young men and women are treated right!
Our next meal at Balboa will be a true homestyle meal including pot roast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans sautéed in garlic, rolls, salads, and sumptuous homemade desserts. Our Wounded Warriors are already marking their calendars, as are we, for we really do treasure the time we get to spend serving those who so willingly serve us and our country.
